Plastic Bag Ban Ordinance
August 28, 2024
Carlsbad, NM - The Carlsbad City Council unanimously passed the proposed ordinance as written come up for a vote at the September 24, 2024 meeting.
Public comment was allowed at the end of the meeting. Around a dozen or so community members spoke to the council regarding the proposed ordinance. A representative for Jonas House and Oasis Church spoke against the plastic bag ban because they use them to help feed families and the homeless. A representative from the Eddy County Solid Waste Division spoke in favor of the ordinance. All told, about 75% of those that spoke were in favor of the ordinance.
It is important to note, that community members will not have an opportunity to speak to the city council in person before the vote on September 24th. You can email the city councilors and the mayor and you can speak at the end of the September 10th meeting.
Below is our discussion with City Councilor Mary Garwood and Solid Waste Commissioner Michelle Perry. This aired at noon on August 27th before the City Council meeting.
