Eddy County Commissioners Close to Final Decision on the Future of the Eddy County Courthouse
Carlsbad, NM - Eddy County Commissioners will hold a public forum on Wednesday, October 23rd, 2024 at 6:00pm at Eddy County Fire and Rescue located at 1400 Commerce Drive in Carlsbad.
This public forum is a chance for the citizens of Eddy County to share their ideas, ask questions, and engage with local officials and fellow residents.
In a discussion with Eddy County Public Information officer Savannah Cabezuela on our local radio show, Community Forum, we discussed the options and what was presented to the public at the October 15th, 2024 Eddy County Commission meeting. At the meeting, 3 plans were discussed and will be presented at the public forum.
What we are calling: Option 1
Option 1 includes building a new Eddy County Courthouse at the Eddy County Judicial Center. The Eddy County Detention Center and the Administration buildings are already planned. Eddy County held a groundbreaking for both of those buildings on October 15th which is located at 1502 Corrales Drive in Carlsbad, NM. The cost of the entire Judicial Complex comes back at just over $342 million.
What would happen to the current Eddy County Courthouse if commission chooses Option 1?
The current Eddy County Courthouse would be turned into a multi-use building for all types of agencies in the community. The floors could potentially be used for the Southeast New Mexico Historical Society, Carlsbad Mainstreet, Carlsbad Department of Development. Potentially a banquet hall or a Legislative meeting room on upper floors. We are told the original courthouse will be updated regardless of what the commission decides.
What we are calling: Option 2
Option 2 includes a complete remodel and addition to the current Eddy County Courthouse downtown. This project would include adding a 4 story addition where the parking lot is currently located, in addition to remodeling all of the original courthouse. A parking garage is being proposed in partnership with the City of Carlsbad once the Eddy County Detention Center is demolished. The cost of the remodel and addition, including the county's part of the parking garage came back at just over $373 million.
What we are calling: Option 3
Option 3 would be to complete the detention center and administration building and then come visit the future of the courthouse.
Public Forum Scheduled for October 23, 2024 at 6pm at the Eddy County Fire & Rescue located at 1400 Commerce Drive. To be heard, you must go in person. No online option is offered.

I attended the Energy Summit on Thursday, October 17th. This was Mayor Lopez's first Energy Summit as Mayor. It was well-attended, informative and showed how the future of Energy is strong and innovative in Eddy County.
Here's a selfie I took holding up the radio stations sponsorship placard.

Roswell had a hard time with the flooding over the weekend and are still cleaning up. The Roswell Daily Record did the best job covering this emergency.
The good news is the weather looks great all week and into next weekend.
